Mississauga City Council appointed Ward 4 councilor John Kovac as second Deputy Mayor at a council meeting on February 12,2025. Mayor Carolyn Parrish initiated the motion as part of her agenda to revamp the City Centre.
Kovac has served on council since 2015. He will fulfill the role of Deputy Mayor until the end of the 2022-2026 term.
As Councilor for the area, Kovac represents 80 000 residents and will support the Mayor in implementing her vision for renewal of the downtown core, including the expansion of the Living Arts Centre, the revitalization of City Hall, and possible plans for a hotel/conference center and a sports stadium.
During an interview last fall, Parrish said she hoped the city could build a 7500 seat “modular” outdoor stadium for $32 million. She said the funds could come from selling a parcel of city-owned land and working with private developers. The ultimate goal would then be to attract a professional soccer team. While there is no timeline for the stadium to be built, the Mayor said she wants it done as soon as possible, as in less than five years.
