Be sure to ask about booking a Starter Session when signing up for your membership.
The City of Mississauga is making bold strides toward a healthier community. As part of this year’s budget cycle, an incredible initiative was announced by Mayor Carolyn Parrish: free fitness memberships for seniors aged 65 and older. This groundbreaking move ensures more people can engage in physical activity, leading to healthier lives and stronger communities.
Starting April 1, fitness centres across Mississauga have seen a remarkable increase in new members— many stepping into a gym for the first time. It’s heartening to witness so many embracing an active lifestyle, proving it’s never too late to prioritize health and well-being.
Embracing the Gym with Confidence
Joining a gym, especially for the first time, can feel intimidating. But the City has designed this initiative so that everyone, regardless of experience, can thrive. If you’re new to fitness, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Our team of exercise counsellors (ECs) and group fitness instructors is here to guide you. I know they’re fantastic. I used to be the Recreation Programmer at South Common Community Centre. One of the city’s best kept secrets is the Starter Session, an orientation for every new member. It introduces you to the gym and shows how to safely use equipment. It also connects you with certified ECs who are often present on the gym floor, tidying up and assisting members. Be sure to ask about booking one—it may take time depending on demand.
The Benefits of Personal Training and Small Group Sessions
Mississauga is home to a team of university-educated, skilled, and affordable personal trainers. With the money saved from your free membership, consider small group sessions or personal training. They provide expert guidance and accountability— whether your goal is strength, pain reduction, or mobility. ECs may mention these during your Starter Session, but they’re never pushy.
A City United for Health and Wellness Mississauga is also part of the Cities for Health initiative, a partnership with Novo Nordisk, the University of Toronto, and others aimed at preventing chronic diseases. This program promotes healthier lifestyles across all ages and backgrounds.
A Grateful Acknowledgment
Thanks to Mayor Parrish and the recreation staff for their leadership and dedication. If you’re 65 or older and a resident, now’s your moment. Your health is your greatest investment— take the first step today!
